Profile & Services

About Me
I'm Aaron Taveras, an independent cartographer based in Arcata, California, and for the last eight years, I have been producing beautiful, accurate custom maps for nearly every purpose and industry. Some past clients have included Stackpole Books, PBS.org, and Science Magazine. Before becoming a freelancer, I worked as a cartographer at the University of Kansas, a contractor cartographer at National Geographic Maps, and a mapping lab manager at Humboldt State University.

As an independent cartographer, I take on all roles, including job management, concept development, prototyping, and production, which allows me to focus more individual attention on each client. I enjoy coming up with creative solutions, combining experimental design concepts with techniques that have beautiful and effective results—I am always trying to create lasting designs.

I offer complete cartographic services including print map design, interactive web map design, 3D map design, geospatial analysis, data collection, and 2D and 3D terrain rendering. If you are interested in what I do, send me an email, let's grab a coffee and talk about your project.

The Design Process
Map Research: All of my maps are meticulously researched before I begin the design and production process. I always use the most up-to-date and authoritative information to ensure that each map is accurate, or develop my own datasets when necessary to fit the requirements of the project.

Compilation & Design: The design process is where things get creative. I can build any map from the ground up or use existing styles—I love a challenge and the opportunity to make your ideas come to life.

Map Production: The key to map production is a clear, efficient, and well-managed process that doesn't hinder map design or quality. I use modern map production and information management tools and techniques that help speed up the map-making process, allowing me to focus on the details.

Editing & Verification: I care about accuracy and carefully review each map, including editing labels, colors, and every other map element. I also review the project specifications and make sure your needs are being met.

Product Delivery: I generally provide digital proofs throughout the design process (PDF format) and print proofs upon request. All projects can be delivered in any format required, whether for offset press or digital display. Working production files are also made available upon final approval.
